Following the Des Plaines Community Foundation’s mission statement to bring together our city’s assets to improve the lives of those who live and work in Des Plaines, members of the Frisbie Senior Center, Des Plaines Health and Human Services, Maine West Clinical Government students and the Des Plaines Community Foundation came together to share thoughts with each other, talk about personal experiences, enjoy new company, get to know each other and have lunch on June 17, 2013.
Without the support of our volunteers, the DPCF could not accomplish its mission.
On Thursday, May 23, 2013 the Des Plaines Community Foundation held a Volunteer Appreciation Pizza Party for all the Maine West Building Trades students. These students were those who built wheelchair ramps and decks and helped in any way asked by the Foundation.
This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Pizza Party was held at the “Homestead” on the Maine West campus. Homestead is the original house on the onion farm that became the Maine West campus. The family who owned the farm and lived there remained even after Maine West was built. Their son graduated from Maine West while living there.

On June 13, Rosemary Argus gave a presentation on the Des Plaines Community Foundation’s mission statement, programs and projects to representatives of IMI Cornelius Company, a global beverage dispensing and cooling equipment supplier.
She had been invited by IMI to take part in the company’s 150-year anniversary, which they celebrated by having its 15,000 employees engage in local charity work.
Each of the 300 Glendale Heights employees had recently made a local impact by donating time and money to local charities.
Hundreds turn out for the Des Plaines Park District Spring Fun Fair
Hundreds of Des Plaines families enjoyed free activities at the sixth annual Des Plaines Park District Spring Fun Fair on Saturday, May 18, at the Mountain View Adventure Center. As we have for the past six years, the Des Plaines Community Foundation came to fit children for free bike helmets. Every year 100 bike helmets are given free ofcharge. Dr. Michael Bagby (whose idea it was, in the firstplace) and his crew of volunteers unpack the helmets andproceed to fit the children in line for the free. “This is awonderful event for families,” said Rosemary Argus, Ex-ecutive Director for the Des Plaines Community Founda-tion. “It is great to see so many families come out and weare happy that we can provide free bicycle helmets everyyear. We know the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet when riding a bike and are happy to help the children of Des Plaines.”
At our recent Board Meeting on June 12, Rich Holke presented two checks to Board President Patrick Devereaux and Executive Director Rosemary Argus.
The Alliant Credit Union Foundation donated $3,500 as the Main Sponsor ofthe 2013 Des Plaines Community Foundation Casino Fundraiser to be held September 6 at the Rivers Casino.
They also gave $5,000 for 10 event tickets and a donation to the Des Plaines Community Foundation. “We are very fortunate to have the Alliant Credit Union Foundation in our community. They are interested in the wellbeing of our residents and our children,” said Executive Director, Rosemary Argus. “The Alliant Credit Union Foundation is generous with their time and money.”
Chris Peterson serves as a Trustee on the Board of the Des Plaines Community Foundation. He also is in charge of the Foundation’s volunteers who drive the elderly and disabled who call the Foundation’s hotline for help.
Chris, himself, has spent hundreds of hours driving Des Plaines residents to medical appointments — on the day of the award, he was picking up groceries and supplies for home bound individuals.
Come bet on the Des Plaines Community Foundation (DPCF) on Friday, September 6, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the 10th annual and only fundraiser at the Cube nightclub at the Des Plaines Rivers Casino.
Tickets for the event are $85 per person before August 20th ($95 after) and will include appetizers, gourmet dinner by Chef William Mcllroy, open bar and entertainment.
There will be a raffle including a grand prize of $500, two second prizes valued $400, and three third prizes valued at $100 each. Raffle tickets can be purchased online at the DPCF website.
RIVERS CASINO EVENT RAISES FUNDS FOR DES PLAINES COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
In September of 2012, the Des Plaines Community Foundation held its 9th annual fundraiser at the Cube night club at the Des Plaines Rivers Casino.
“The Foundation raised more than $27,000—twice the amount that was generated last year,” said Rosemary Argus, executive director of the Foundation. “We thank all the donors and Des Plaines businesses that supported us and helped make this year’s event such an amazing success.”
The Des Plaines Community Foundation, T-Bob’s Smoked Bar-BQ, 1165 S. Elmhurst Road, Sysco Foods Chicago and Panera Bread in Metropolitan Square worked together in November of 2012 to provide and deliver Thanksgiving Day dinners. As a result, more than 80 families, seniors and people with disabilities had a very happy Thanksgiving.
According to Argus, the list of people served at Thanksgiving consisted of Des Plaines residents who request assistance by calling the Neighbors Helping Neighbors hotline at 888-646-8898. Pastor Chuck Reid, of Bethesda Worship Center, contacted Des Plaines Ministries, asking for the names of elderly and/or local
people with disabilities who were going to be alone on Thanksgiving.
Since 2006, Maine West High School Building-Trade students have touched the lives of residents, young and old, with various challenges, noted Argus.
“Utilizing their construction skills to build ramps, decks, picnic tables, and paint houses, and during winter even helped shovel snow for those with various challenges,” Argus said. “They have come to the aid of many residents that needed assistance.”
The newest offering to Des Plaines residents is an 8-by-10-foot yard storage shed covered with vinyl siding. The cost is about $1,800 and the profits from the shed will be used to continually fund the Maine West student programs.
